Monkeypox signs symptoms and treatment

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that is similar to smallpox, but less severe. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is spread through contact with infected animals or through human-to-human transmission.

Signs and symptoms: The signs and symptoms of monkeypox usually develop within 5 to 21 days of exposure to the virus and include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rash, which typically begins on the face then spreads to the rest of the body
  • Lesions, which are usually fluid-filled and may become pustular or scab over

Treatment: There is no specific treatment for monkeypox, but supportive care can help manage the symptoms. This may include:

  • Taking antipyretics (fever-reducing medications) to relieve fever and pain
  • Keeping the affected person hydrated with fluids and electrolytes
  • Administering antibiotics to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections
  • Applying calamine lotion or other soothing creams to alleviate itching
  • Isolating the affected person to prevent further spread of the virus

In severe cases, hospitalization may be required to manage complications such as dehydration, pneumonia, or encephalitis. Vaccination against smallpox may also offer some protection against monkeypox.
